Oldham juniors ‘Tri’ their best
The sun shone on the second Oldham Junior Triathlon, which took place last weekend at Failsworth Sports Centre.
A record 104 local children took part in the event on Saturday 7th July, 84 more than last year, some travelling from as far as Liverpool.
In race one, youngsters aged eight to 10 swam 50m, cycled 800m and ran 400m. Those aged 11 to 14 swam 200m, cycled 2,000m and ran 1,200m in race two.
Emily Hyder (first female) and Theo Nutall (first male) came in first to win the 8 to 10 year old event, while Lois Davis (first female) and Joshua Doherty (first male) took the 11 to 14 year old title.
A crowd of more than 200 spectators came along to cheer the children on during the activities, creating a fantastic atmosphere.
“The Failsworth Junior Triathlon is a great way to encourage youngsters to get active, as it comprises sporting disciplines they’re likely to already be familiar with. This weekend’s event was safe, non-competitive – we record an overall time for each participant so each child is a winner – and most of all, it was great fun,” says Paul Thewlis, General Manager of OCL’s Failsworth Sports Centre.
“It was a wonderful day from start to finish, proven by the smiles on everyone’s faces and the cheering that could be heard all the way around the course from family and friends. The support and feedback for this event has been amazing and the best part about it has been seeing children just having a try and experiencing a Junior Triathlon,” says Kelly Tattersall, Community & Partnership Development Officer at OCL.
OCL received hugely positive feedback from parents and the children themselves after the event. Natalie Taylor says: “A brilliant day, my boys and their friends loved it.” Mum to two competitors Sharon McCormick says: “My two love it, very friendly and well organised event.”
