move Altrincham reveals its phased reopening plan as community and staff anticipation builds

Trafford Leisure has unveiled the carefully planned phased reopening schedule for move Altrincham, the town’s newly transformed state-of-the-art wellbeing facility, which will open its doors on 26th August 2025.

The £20 million-pound refurbishment has created a modern wellness destination that will serve the Altrincham community for generations to come, and Trafford Leisure’s phased opening approach ensures both staff and residents can fully embrace all the new centre has to offer.

From Tuesday 26 August move Altrincham will welcome back 1,500 swimmers (primarily children and young people) whose lessons were temporarily relocated to Sale Leisure Centre during the building works. These young swimmers will continue with their familiar instructors in the new 25m pool and 20m learner pool. The new fitness suite will also be welcoming new and existing members and MOST Bakery will be open serving food and drinks.

From Monday 1 September, move Altrincham will open its doors to ‘pay and play’ swimmers, local groups and school parties, who are invited to explore the full aquatic facilities. This phase also marks the exciting launch of fitness classes in two flexible studio spaces, plus the opening of two major new services: The Cove Spa and the much-anticipated gymnastics hub.

Finally, from Monday 8 September all move Altrincham facilities will become available, with full membership access, including the indoor cycle studio and the four-court sports hall.

Jo Cherrett is CEO of Trafford Leisure, a community interest company wholly owned by Trafford Council, which manages leisure in Trafford on behalf of the council, using any profits and assets for community benefit. She says: “We’re managing the opening in a planned, phased way, as we did with the reopening of move Urmston, to help our team and customers ease back in and make everyone feel comfortable.

“We are especially excited about returning our Altrincham Swim England learn-to-swim programme back to its home, but one of the most exciting aspects of the reopening is the relaunch of our comprehensive gymnastics programme, which is now housed in a dedicated gymnastics hub.”

The programme caters for all ages and abilities from 18 months to teenagers, and runs during the week and at weekends. Classes include GymFants for toddlers aged 18 months to three years, building balance, coordination and confidence, Gymsparks classes for young children aged three to five years, who can train alongside expert coaches working towards three awards, and high-energy Gymsparks sessions for five to eight year olds who have 14 skills to master and eight achievement awards to earn. Older children aged nine to 12 years can advance their skills through structured sessions and an eight-stage award scheme. Trafford Leisure is developing new classes for teenagers, and registration of interest is now open, which will help shape the timetable.

Cherrett continues: “We have been heartened with the pre-opening membership sales and customer interest in move Altrincham, and can’t wait to welcome you back, as there really is something for everyone here. Our expert staff are really excited and can’t wait to meet you and help you discover all the opportunities for wellbeing that move Altrincham has to offer.”

Cllr Eve Parker, Trafford Council’s Executive Member for Leisure, Arts, Culture and Heritage, says: “The exciting, phased opening of move Altrincham is now almost upon us and the Council and Trafford Leisure are delighted to be welcoming the community in. The impressive gymnastics offer is just one element of a programme of enjoyable ways to lead an active life, whatever a customer’s interests and abilities.”

move Altrincham represents a significant step forward in Trafford Council’s mission to get more people moving more often. The redevelopment, supported by Sport England, creates long-term sustainable leisure provision designed to deliver optimal health and wellbeing outcomes for local residents while reducing health inequalities across the borough.

move Altrincham’s comprehensive offer includes accessible features such as a pool pod for improved accessibility, inclusive Changing Places toilets, and a welcoming café operated by local favourite MOST Bakery.

The facility also features cutting-edge sustainability measures, including air-sourced heat pumps and solar panels, supporting the Council’s goal to achieve carbon neutrality by 2038.
