Massive redevelopment underway at Cwmbran Stadium
Work has started on an exciting redevelopment at Cwmbran Stadium. The project will see a four-court sports hall remodelled into a vertical adventure playground, a soft play centre and a cafe. A 70-station fitness suite will also be created.
The work is being carried out by specialist leisure design and build company Createability, alongside development partner Alliance Leisure, which has also part-funded the project, and will ensure the co-ordination and delivery of the complete facility on behalf of Torfaen Leisure Trust.
The Trust was formed in July 2013 and manages Cwmbran Stadium, Pontypool Active Living Centre, Fairwater Leisure Centre, Bowden Active Living Centre and Pontypool Ski Centre on behalf of Torfaen County Borough Council.
Work has already started creating a massive 500 sq m soft play structure, which can cater for up to 150 children at any one time, a 19-element VerTgo vertical adventure climbing playground,along with a party room and a cafe and seating area.
The current cafe, kitchen and a meeting room under the stadium seating area will be converted into a new 350 sq m fitness suite with functional training to replace the small, existing gym on the stadium’s first floor.
Improvements will also be made to the current reception area with new lighting, graphics and over cladding of the reception desk to create a more modern, welcoming look and feel. All the internal work is expected to complete in Spring 2015.
Ian Cotgrave, Managing Director of Createability said: “This is the second scheme of this type that we have carried out in partnership with Alliance Leisure. Previously the Stadium had a four-court sports hall as well as an eight-court hall. Converting the four-court hall into a soft play centre and VerTgo climbing structure will bring new revenue and activity to the centre and attract a new breed of users.”

These new facilities will help to sustain Cwmbran Stadium in the long term, taking into account changing fitness trends and creating amore contemporary environment for people of all ages to enjoy. Once complete the new facilities will act as a focal point for community activities and increase levels of physical activity across the county borough.”
