A successful start to the 2018 Milltown Race series

The Milltown Races Sprint Triathlon returned to Oldham last weekend and, despite rainy conditions, has been hailed as a roaring success.

In total, 196 local people took part in the event, which took place on Sunday 22nd April and was organised by Oldham Community Leisure. The Sprint Triathlon consists of a 400 metre swim, a 20k bike ride and a 5k run, which can be done individually or as part of a team.

Every competitor on the start line managed to cross the finish line, with Jake Callis from Leeds Beckett finishing first, Martin Cain second and Cole Drews third in the male race – both representing Team Tri Guru. The first female across the line was Janet Grint from Stockport Triathlon Club, followed by Cat Jessop from ELRC in second and Kath Thomas from Team Tri Guru in third. In the team event, Girls Giving It A Go – made up of three local sisters Liz Newell (swim), Martha Tibbot (bike) and Bridget Lancashire (run) – came first.

“Our Milltown Races Saddleworth Sprint Triathlon 2018 was, once again, a brilliant event. It was fantastic to see some many people taking part,” says Kelly Tattersall, Community & Partnership Development Officer at Oldham Community Leisure.

“Many individuals had chosen our event as their first Sprint Triathlon and, although the weather took a turn for the worst, we have had some amazing feedback from everyone that took part. We would like to say a massive thank you to all of our volunteers who helped to make this event as success and all the local support from Oldham business and residents.”

The 400m swim took place at Saddleworth Pool & Leisure Centre, while the 20k cycle ride took in the scenic route from Uppermill to Diggle, Delph, Scouthead, Austerlands, Lees, Grotton, Lydgate, and Grasscroft before returning to Uppermill.

To finish the event, the 5k run followed the Pennine Bridleway to Chew Valley Road in Greenfield, finishing at Saddleworth Sports Centre.

Next up on the Milltown Races calendar is the Junior Triathlon, set to take place at Failsworth Sports Centre on Saturday 7th July 2018.

New for 2018, Oldham Community Leisure will also be hosting a 5k Race for Life, in partnership with Race for Life Oldham, which is set to take place in Alexandra Park on Sunday 24th June.
